Bruce Gilden was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1946. He became a member of Magnum Photos in 1998, and a full member in 2002. Gilden’s fascination with curious characters, a main theme in his work, was already evident at the end of the sixties when he photographed his Coney Island reportage. His work has received a number of awards, including the three National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships, the 1996 European Publishers Award for Photography and in 1999 the Japan Foundation Artist’s Fellowship.
